Italy's 3rd. Noble Red Grape...

One more for the last of the cold nights!! Originally producing fruit for Mastroberardino, Salvatore Molettieri produced his first vintage in 1988. These vines are approx 25yrs. old, sitting at around 1,500+ ft. above sea level, growing in volcanic soils & farmed with no chemicals. Fermented and macerated betw. 20-25 days & aged for 40 months in 50% new & 2nd. use barriques & 50% in large French and Slavonian oak casks. Every 6 months the wine in the barriques gets racked into the large oak casks and vice versa, finally resting in bottle for 6 months before release.

Deep & brooding, a hypnotic nose shows spicy aromas, red sour cherry, raspberry, black pepper, nutmeg and licorice. Dense, powerful and complex on the palate, offering dried plum, cocoa, tobacco, leather and balsamic inflections. The grainy, but firm, tannins round the wine out nicely & there’s a wonderful overall balance between the tannins, fruit, alcohol & crackling acid, all leading to a long & intoxicating finish.
