Filipa Pato ‘Nossa Calcario’ Branco Bairrada 2017

Updated: Nov 18, 2019

Portugal Rockssss...

I love Portugal, my Dad lives there & I’ve been going since I was a small boy. Portuguese wines right now are hitting new heights & everyone should take notice & start drinking them! This wine, from Filipa Pato is a superb example of what’s out there right now. Filipa grew up on the knee of Bairrada’s most famous wine maker, Luis Pato, her father. She fell in love with winemaking, worked in Bordeaux, Margaret River & Mendoza before embarking on her own wine career in 2001. She now farms 12 hectares scattered in various plots throughout Bairrada, all planted with native varietals, practices biodynamic farming with minimal intervention in the cellar to craft ‘vinhos autênticos sem maquilagem’ - ‘Authentic Wines Without Makeup.’

This 100% Bical is fermented in used 500 liter French oak casks with batonage twice a month through February, then rested & bottled in May. A bright floral nose of white flowers, cut grass & lemon zest give way to a lovely creamy textural mouthfeel from the batonage & used oak. This round, voluptuous palate shows ripe pear, a hint tropical fruit (papaya), bright acidity, a definitive chiseled flintiness & bitter almond on the lengthy finish.
