Sierra de Toloño ‘Camino de Santa Cruz’ 2016 Rioja Spain Tempranillo

Updated: Nov 18, 2019

Queen of the Sierra.....

High up in the foothills of the Sierra de Toloño, in Rioja Alavesa, Sandra Bravo works in some of the oldest & highest altitude vineyards in Rioja, growing Garnacha, Tempranillo, Viura & Graciano. A young, well travelled winemaker who worked in France, New Zealand & Italy before coming back home in 2012 to craft her pure & expressive wines in Rioja. This is Sandra’s ultimate expression of Tempranillo, the soul of Sierra de Toloño she calls it, from a single-vineyard planted on pure limestone & rock.

Fermented in amphorae & aged in 500 liter used oak for 12 months, this has a beautifully high toned, aromatic nose of violet candy, ripe black fruit & herbaceous flecks. The textured palate holds a regal power with mushroom, savory herbs & forest floor, a firm yet rounded, tannic backbone & distinct minerality shine through to balance things out before the long, supple finish.
